Native to the Mediterranean region, chicory now grows wild in Seattle in dry, sunny places. (Cultivated varieties are eaten as salad leaves, while the roots are sometimes ground into a coffee substitute.) Purple flowers bloom for only one day, fading to white and closing by evening. In European folklore, carrying a sprig of chicory can “open locked doors” to unseen places. Chicory blooms from June to mid-October.
